I have always wondered why puns are funny. If you actually think about them they are not funny at all and wonder who came up with this and how did they come up with it. Did it start out as an inside joke between friends who just started to tell it to other people, who then did not understand it but laughed just because the other person was laughing? You ended with a really good question that I never thought about. I believe knock knock jokes are acceptable based on the tradition of the joke. As soon as a person heres the phrase "knock knock" they know that it is leading to a joke, therefore the level of the person speaking's education is not a factor. Whereas other malapropisms are just said and can be taken in the different way than what was intended.
